8 Reasons Why Most Christians are Financially Broke Series - Part 1
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be looking at what I believe are Biblical reasons as to why most Christians are financially broke. What do I mean by “financially broke?” One or more of these:
- You have no money.
- You have more month than money.
- You are living paycheck-to-paycheck.
This is what I mean, and, sadly enough, most Christians are in one or more of these situations!
We’ll start at Reason #8 and work our way to Reason #1.
So here’s Reason #8:
Most Christians, like everyone else, are in debt.
Most of us have succumbed to the world’s habits of buying what we can’t afford. Then we wonder why we can’t give, save and live like a Christian. Many of us are so busy trying to pay down debt that we can’t get ahead.
But we have to stop becoming financial slaves:
“Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.” - Proverbs 22:7 (NLT)
This is important to learn on a personal level, like some of the other reasons you’ll see in upcoming posts, because we can take these same bad habits to the entrepreneurial level. Be sure to subscribe so that you can receive these upcoming posts!
Sometimes though, on the entrepreneurial level (say, as a jobpreneur), making more money, if you use it wisely, can help you get out of debt.
What’s been your experience?
Are you in the process of getting out of debt? How’s it coming?
Are you out of debt? How did/do you do it?
Do you think entrepreneurship can help a person get out of debt?

Hi Bruce. I’m a fan of Dave Ramsey because he’s not a fan of Christians being in debt! Society has told us that debt is just a part of every families finances, but I don’t buy it. But I’m still in the process of getting out of the debt hole I’ve dug over more than 20 years. I’m doing the jobrepreneur thing and it’s helping.
This is a great topic and I’m looking forward to the other seven reasons.

Yeah Jim, I know what you mean about society and telling us it’s okay to be in debt.
Unfortunately, a lot of preachers and pastors have bought into this mindset, too. They talk about buying a house and getting people into a “first-time” homebuyer’s program (although now in this economy that’s kinda-been “hush-hush”), all the while helping to drive many people into debt.
They either forget or just don’t mention Proverbs 24:27, which says to get “your business” in order and afterwords to build your house.
